It would have been far more appropriate for the VIC Cancer Registry to be given funding to upgrade its system to enable it to extend its operations nationally. Each of the other State Cancer Registries should be made Members (part owners) of the new Registry and appropriately funded to bring their operations across under the National Cancer Registry banner.

Given that Telstra Health has admitted that it is lacking in industry knowledge and experience in regards to the operation of a Cancer Registry and that it has turned to the VIC Cancer Registry for help to fill this huge hole it beggars belief that the Government would not have supported the Cancer Registries to merge their operations in this way. The National Blood Registry is working well having been formed from multiple State Blood Banks.

Labor should push for a similar outcome with a National Cancer Registry made up from progressive merging of the Sate Cancer Registries which have show they have been very competent and effective over many years and there is no reason to expect they would not be capable of doing an excellent job this time.

The federal government has only one agenda - grab as much data as they can get away with. Why? - they don't know. Just in case they might find it useful. Metadata, health records, census, welfare, tax. Dumb and simplistic.

For the record we are not sinking, we are just low in the water. Much has happened, very little of substance has changed, and most problems remain. It is all just a communication problem, and that the benefits have been undersold. We now have a fully transparent culture and are ready to listen but not to understand just to nod and smile a while.
