ANDHealth - Special Announcement: 7 September 2022

ANDHealth, Australia’s leading digital health commercialisation organisation, in partnership with the Victorian Government, today announced it has received $2.4M from the Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre and Biotechnology Fund to create the Victorian Connected Health Innovation & Commercialisation Centre (CHICC).

The CHICC has been established to drive the creation and commercialisation of digital and digitally enabled medical technology companies and raise Victoria’s profile as a leading centre for Australia’s fast growing connected health sector.

ANDHealth CEO and Managing Director Bronwyn Le Grice said, “This investment by the Victorian Government represents a significant commitment to growing a strong connected health sector, comprising both digital and digitally enabled medical technologies. The CHICC will support the increase of medical technology manufacturing, create highly skilled jobs and ultimately deliver technologies that will result in better health outcomes for all Australians.”

“Cutting edge medical technologies are increasingly leveraging the power of software to deliver improved patient outcomes. In many cases, medical technologies are powered by software which is instrumental in, or solely responsible for, the clinical benefit to patients. Software also makes these technologies more accessible and affordable for healthcare consumers and our healthcare system. The CHICC will act as a central resource to support accelerated commercialisation of these types of technologies in Victoria.”

Funded by the Victorian Government and rolled out by ANDHealth, the CHICC and associated commercialisation programs are expected to engage 500 participants per year. The CHICC gives Victorian connected health SMEs access to leading international experts via an international expert in-residence program, targeted commercialisation workshops and access to collaborative and industry-led programs from across Australia.

The CHICC will be based in Melbourne CBD, linking the BioMedical Precincts of Parkville and East Melbourne with the emerging technology hubs of Cremorne and West Melbourne.

“This new Centre will strengthen Victoria’s nation-leading advanced manufacturing capabilities and our status as a growing hub for medtech production,” said Victorian Minister for Industry Support and Recovery, Ben Carroll.

“We will continue to support local medtech manufacturers to create thousands of high-skilled jobs across our state.”

“Our medical researchers and innovators are leaders in their field, regularly bringing world-first medtech products and devices to market that will change the lives of Victorians and people around the world,” said Victorian Minister for Innovation, Medical Research and the Digital Economy, Jaala Pulford.

Drawing on ANDHealth’s deep domain expertise, advocacy, global networks, and proven ability to deliver programs that achieve measurable health and economic impact, the CHICC will connect and communicate Australia’s connected health technology capabilities through the health, industry and government ecosystem.

The project forms part of the Stronger Medtech Connections Program delivered by the Victorian Government’s $20 million Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre (AMMC). AMMC aims to strengthen connections between manufacturers, researchers and innovators to grow Victoria’s medtech manufacturing sector.

Funding boost for Victorian medtech innovators

By Staff Writer

The Victorian Government has contributed $2.4 million to support local medtech manufacturers and innovators compete in the booming global digital health products market.

The Victorian Minister for Industry Support and Recovery Ben Carroll today announced that the $2.4 million from the Government’s Australian Medtech Manufacturing Centre and Biotechnology Fund will go towards establishing the Victorian Connected Health Innovation and Commercialisation Centre in Melbourne’s CBD.

Delivered by ANDHealth, the Government says the new centre will support up to 500 local companies each year, connecting them with Atmo Biosciences, innovators and investors who can help them fast-track the development of new digital health products, such as local inventions like the Atmo Gas Capsule and PKG Watch.

Created by Box Hill-based Atmo Biosciences, the Atmo Gas Capsule electronically reports data about the gastrointestinal system when swallowed, allowing medical professionals to quickly identify and determine treatment for gut disorders including irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease.

The PKG Watch was created by Melbourne-based Global Kinetics to help people with Parkinson’s disease keep on top of their treatment by recording and monitoring their symptoms and reminding them to take the right amount of medication.

The Government notes that medtech is one of the fastest growing sectors in Victoria’s economy, generating more than $21.4 billion in revenue and supporting more than 31,000 workers - and the sector’s growth is complemented by the more than 6000 people working at Victoria’s 18 medical research institutes who generate the scientific breakthroughs that inform product development.

Today’s announcement follows the Victorian Government’s recent $3.2 million investment into 12 Victorian medtech businesses through the Medtech Manufacturing Capability Program that will create more than 90 new jobs across the state.

“This new Centre will strengthen Victoria’s nation-leading advanced manufacturing capabilities and our status as a growing hub for medtech production,” says Minister for Industry Support and Recovery Ben Carroll.

“We’ll continue to support local medtech manufacturers to create thousands of high-skilled jobs across our state.”

What on earth is going on that causes such a trivial bit of funding to be news and to be the recipients of such exaggerated claims of job creation and impact? I have no idea! Don’t you love the alphabet soup of organisations who are involved….

I really do despair how so many of these poorly supported and funded initiatives are going to find it so hard to get traction. You also have to worry how much of these funds are consumed by overheads etc?

Does anyone have some encouraging stories to share where success is being achieved?

David.
