AusHealthIT Poll Number 527 – Results – 17th May, 2020.

Here are the results of the poll.

Are The Digital Health Deployments In Response To The COVID-19 Health Emergency Going To Lead To A Permanent Increase In Adoption And Use Of These Services (Telehealth, Remote Monitoring etc.) Into The Future?

Yes 76% (67)

No 23% (20)

I Have No Idea 1% (1)

Total votes: 88

It seems that a large majority feel COVID-19 will cause permanent changes in the way things are done using Digital Health.

Any insights on the poll welcome as a comment, as usual.

A very low number of votes for some reason.

It must also have been a very easy question with 1/88 readers were not sure how to respond.

Again, many, many thanks to all those that voted!

David.

David,

Re this week's poll. There is a third possibility....

Australia Avoids A Major 'Second Wave' Of COVID-19 Infections But Does Not Return Largely To Normal Over The Next 6-12 Months?

I.E. we have a New Normal which either lasts a long time or forever.

I agree it is a possibility with the scale of the financial support the Government has provided but it seems pretty unlikely that if we get no 'second wave' that we won't be well on our way.

To me the major risk is if the rest of the world fails to get their act together (US, UK, Brazil etc.) we will be basically stuck in an awful limbo! That would be the worst of all possible outcomes I reckon - and may well happen.

Your point is well made.

IMHO, the key issues are:

1. Immunity after getting and recovering from SARS COV-2 is either non-existent or temporary

2. If #1 is true or false, we cannot develop a vaccine. Just like the common cold.

The only hope then is evolution which a) will take a very long time and b) means many people have to die. If people don't die of the virus before procreating, then evolution will not occur.

Addit. I suggest you vote NO is you feel we will wind up stuck or in a new normal which is much worse than we were before!

@11:29 AM Does that mean .... if people procreate before they die then evolution will continue.

I agree with the general outline Bernard. What happens next depends on both the evolution of the pathogen and of the human response to it, both biological and social. History can guide to some extent but we must also appreciate the changed world.

I suspect that COVID 19 will become a “lived with” pathogen, social and political forces will trump medical science. This has happened in the past.

The wicked problem created will play out when a new wave emerges or waves continue and become a normal way of life. Healthcare is in the hands of accountants.

3:29 PM. Not sure being alive is a mandatory requirement, perhaps you could put forward a digital innovation solution for this to ADHA, part of the cradle to grave strategy.

Assuming you are serious...

No.

If people die after procreating, then evolution will not occur.

People with "bad" genes i.e. people who die because of the virus, need to die before they can pass on their "bad" genes.

@5:22 PM Yes, I was actually serious and also mistaken / confused by what you were trying to say.

Your last line @5:22 PM has clarified your earlier statement perfectly. Thank you. Ahh, the nuances of English and complexities of using negative speak!

So, ... If people die of the virus before they can procreate then they will not pass on their bad genes and evolution will be able to occur.

That's one of the mechanisms of evolution. There are others where new characteristics or variations can be introduced and spread.
