ADHA starts turning cyber security strategy into reality

iTnews talks to CISO John Borchi.

The Australian Digital Health Agency (ADHA) marked the start of implementing its latest cyber security strategy with a flurry of requests for information (RFIs) late last month.

ADHA CISO John Borchi told iTnews the work program is the first phase in realising the cyber-security plan published by the agency in March this year [pdf]. 

Borchi said the strategy responds to changes in the threat landscape in recent years.

One of those changes, he said, was demonstrated in how the Log4j vulnerability unfolded.

At first, the ADHA’s expectations were in line with most people in cyber security – the vulnerability would be patched “pretty quickly”.

New Footscray Hospital to deploy Hills' nurse call platform

It will be installed in over 500 inpatient beds.

The new Footscray Hospital in Melbourne's west is adopting a nurse call solution from Hills Health Solutions, the digital health arm of ASX-listed company Hills Limited.

Hills Limited won the estimated A$7 million ($4.7 million) contract to supply and install its Nurse Call platform in more than 500 beds in the upcoming hospital. 

According to a media release, the nurse call system will be integrated with smart touchscreen terminals in every patient room to improve workflow management and reporting for both clinical and operational teams.

THE LARGER CONTEXT

Following this contract award, the company now joins the consortium assigned to build the new A$1.5 billion ($1.010 billion) new Footscray Hospital, Victoria's single biggest healthcare infrastructure investment to date. Operated by Western Health, the public hospital is being upgraded to support the increasing demand from Melbourne's growing western suburbs, aiming to accommodate 15,000 more patients each year. Its construction, which began in March last year, is expected to be completed by 2025.

NSW digitises fluid and infusion management in rural health districts

The rollout of the FIM solution seeks to improve patient safety while providing additional support to clinicians and nurses.

Rural local health districts in New South Wales have rolled out a fluid and infusion management solution developed by eHealth NSW.

The implementation covers intravenous/subcutaneous fluid therapy, electrolyte maintenance/replacement therapy, and all infusions which are ordered on the NSW Adult/Paediatric Fluid Order charts. The rollout package also includes Paediatric PowerPlans, automation for fluid balance calculations, and reporting functions to monitor performance and management.

It has been introduced in all rural LHDs in the state, including residential aged care facilities and multipurpose services sites, with an implementation at Mid North Coast planned for the end of the year.

WHY IT MATTERS

According to a media release, the rollout of the FIM solution seeks to improve patient safety while providing additional prescribing and administration support to clinicians and nurses. It removes the need for paper infusion charts, allowing clinicians to prescribe, administer, and manage  fluid and infusion orders or continuous infusions in the EMR, alongside patients' regular medications.

Westmead Hospital pilots new tool to identify sepsis risk in EDs

Westmead Hospital is piloting a new algorithm tool designed to identify sepsis risk in the emergency department’s (ED’s) waiting room.

The pilot project complements the Clinical Excellence Commission's (CEC's) Sepsis Kills program and supports clinicians in recognising and treating this infection. Application of the Sepsis Kills program can be difficult on patients in the ED waiting room as they are not under rigorous clinical observation.

“Sepsis can be difficult to diagnose in ED. Delays in diagnosing and treating sepsis can result in loss of patient lives,” said Dr Amith Shetty, Senior Staff specialist at Westmead Hospital and Clinical Director of NSW Health.

Developed in collaboration with CEC, Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD), Sydney Health Partners, the University of Sydney, NSW Health Pathology and eHealth NSW, the clinical decision support tool (CDST) called the Sepsis Risk Tool Dashboard combines a patient’s age, gender and vitals as they are entered into the EMR.

The dashboard passes this information through an algorithm trained on historic data concerning patients with sepsis to create a risk score — thanks to artificial intelligence. A risk percentage is calculated for each patient to support the clinician in assessing if sepsis is a risk or not. The more frequently this tool is used to detect risk of sepsis, the better the risk score algorithm will become.

Westmead Hospital in New South Wales is piloting a new AI-powered clinical decision support tool for assessing the risk of sepsis in ED waiting rooms.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT

The Sepsis Risk Tool Dashboard provides a risk score of patients with sepsis using an algorithm trained on historic patient data. It also combines a patient's age, gender, and vitals as they are entered into the EMR. 

The AI tool was developed by eHealth NSW in collaboration with the Clinical Excellence Commission (CEC), Sydney Health Partners, the University of Sydney and NSW Health Pathology. 

It is being introduced to complement the existing Sepsis Kills programme at Westmead, which seeks to support clinicians in recognising and treating the infection.

The clinical pilot will run for six months after which eHealth NSW will decide if the support tool can be scaled statewide.

Wearable devices are being deployed across emergency departments in East Metropolitan Health, beginning with implementation at Armadale Hospital.

The technology rollout is being introduced as part of the Health in a Virtual Environment service. It is being formally introduced first at Armadale Hospital following trials at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) and Bentley Hospital.

The ED waiting room at Armadale has been outfitted with three devices: an armband, blood pressure cuff and oximeter, for the continuous monitoring of vital parameters, such as heart and respiratory rates, blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels and skin temperature. 

RPH will also go live with the wearable devices in their ED next month, October.

Pressure on rural hospitals creates tech innovation boom

Rural and remote hospitals are facing mounting issues such as legacy technology stacks, funding, geography, and a lack of doctors in country towns.  

But, despite limited money and, in the case of Victoria, no mandate to collaborate, regional hospitals have responded to mounting pressure by developing collaborating groups with common problems.

This has often resulted in implementing innovative new “edge” technologies to solve the issues of geography and funding – technologies that even some city hospitals haven’t got to yet. 

An interesting example of this is the implementation of a cloud-based region-wide solution to the patient discharge summary problem across the Loddon Mallee health network by Kofax.

This session will give you an overview of the platform, along with the opportunity to access and use My Health Record at the end of the session.

NBN Co working on access for disadvantaged families

In talks with government over election promise.

NBN Co is considering taking a model it uses to support the most remote Indigenous communities, and re-purposing it to support disadvantaged urban families.

From opposition, prime minister Anthony Albanese promised support for around 30,000 families who have no broadband.

Answering a question during yesterday’s ACCANect 2022 conference, NBN Co’s general manager of segments and stakeholder relations Sam Dimarco,  said NBN Co is working with the government on how to deliver on that promise.

Dimarco said NBN Co is considering using wi-fi as a retail distribution medium: its network would provide fibre to medium or high density public housing, and a retail partner would offer free or subsidised connections via wi-fi access.
